The name “Deutsche Volkstanz Gruppe” translates to “German Folk Dance Group” in English. Our style of dance calls back to the traditions of a simpler time in Germany, with connections to Switzerland, Austria, and other countries in the region. Our group and dancers often have ties to the German immigrants to the Ohio area from the 1800s, with a formal organization being established in the early 1920s (“Toledo Turn und Sportverein”). We are a proud member of the Toledo Turners organization and continue to spread the cultural dance tradition.
The highlight of our dance style includes songs where we “FLY!” Typically, two male dancers spin around a pivot point, creating centrifugal force and causing the female dancers holding onto them to go airborne! The picture above is from one of those dances. However, if you’d like to give German folk dancing a try, and that sounds too challenging for you – we have many non-flying dances as well!
We are also available for booking in the North Ohio / Southeast Michigan area. Fill out a Booking Inquiry form and we will be in touch soon.
Gemütlichkeit
Our group embodies this German term, which directly translates to “Coziness” but is more accurately described below (via Wikipedia) :
a German-language word used to convey the idea of a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer. Other qualities encompassed by the term include cosiness, peace of mind, and a sense of belonging and well-being springing from social acceptance.
